Monastery in the Middle of the Mountains

The visit to Serang is one of my most unforgettable experiences in life. The journey getting here was a bit challenging, at least for me. The hike was mostly ascending, climbing stairs and even some steep trails. We even spent an hour ascending an endless flight of stairs. I remember the relief I felt whenever we came across suspension bridges since I could rest after crossing them. However, this journey made our arrival to Serang so fulfilling.Serang Monastery is a centuries-old Buddhist sanctuary located in the Kyimolung Valley of Nepal’s Gorkha district. Due to its remoteness, it could take multiple days of trekking to get here. The monastery is home to hundreds of monks and nuns who practice the teachings of Buddhism. There is also a primary school within the monastery grounds where children from nearby villages go.The days in Serang were filled with tranquility, observing how each day unfolds. I watched the monks and nuns in their daily routines, porters come and go with the supplies, and pilgrims paying their respects. Animals like mules and Himalayan tahrs grazed freely on the grounds.Waking up in such peace is a rare privilege these days, and I felt a deep sense of tranquility as I observed the community’s simple life.
