I had recently broken up with my boyfriend of 11 years, moved house, and booked a vacation to Thailand, as you do.
It was 4 days prior to leaving. I was meeting a friend to see a movie. I popped into a milk bar to grab a drink and jumped into a taxi to the cinema. When we arrived my wallet was missing, so we drove back to the milk bar. Unfortunately it was not there. I apologised to the driver, and he unhappily drove away.
I had previously lived nearby, in Bondi, so I went to my old apartment and knocked on the door. Someone had just been there with my found wallet, but left with it. At least I knew that person was trying to get it back to me. I called the police, but nada.
I put a hold on my cards, borrowed some cash from my new house mate, and thought positively about its return. At least I had my passport.
A day passed with nothing. Then another day. Nothing.
Then the day of departure I went to the bank, withdrew cash and bought some travellers cheques. Walking out of the bank, I received a phone call from my gym. Someone had found my wallet and was trying to contact me. I wrote down the number and called.
“ Yes. I have your wallet!”
Me “ Hooray! Where are you?”
“Alexandria”
That was great. I could pick it up on my way to the airport. I had time.
“ But your wallet is at my home in Bondi”. She didn’t get home until after 6pm, leaving me no time to get it before my flight at 8pm.
“ But there is a side door unlocked at the house. The wallet is next to my bed. You can let yourself in”.
What a star!
So I finished packing. I called a taxi, stopped at a shop on the way to her home to buy a big bunch of flowers. The taxi waited outside while I went around the side of the house, went inside, found her bedroom, and my wallet beside it. I left the flowers on her bed.
I made it to the airport on time, cashed up, reinstated my cards, and had a wonderful and well needed vacation.
I will be forever grateful for the generosity and trust of this wonderful stranger.
