Bowerbird’s Cacophony

A male Tooth-billed Bowerbird (Scenopoeetes dentirostris) calling at his bower in the Crater Lakes National Park near Yungaburra, Queensland. The genus is monotypic, and this species is endemic to the Wet Tropics of northeast Queensland, making it a pretty special local bird. It mimics other birds in a raucous but enchanting stream of sounds interspersed with quiet mimicry, and its repertoire includes an array of local parrots, honeyeaters and thornbills, among others. It is locally common where it occurs, but its habitat is fragmented and under treat from climate change and other processes.
