Against odds: finding the elusive Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo

Many might think a kangaroo in a tree sounds absurd, but these remarkable creatures do exist in the rainforests of northern Queensland. I spent three nights scouring canopies of the Atherton Tablelands with a headtorch, battling rain and leeches, searching for the eye-shine of a Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo. I had given up hope, then on my very last morning, just as I pulled into a carpark for a rest stop, I spotted one staring down at me. It was a truly serendipitous moment and I’ll never forget the magical feeling of seeing one of our more beautiful tree-dwelling marsupials.
